East End Radiology - Bone
Densitometry
What
is a Bone Densitometry?
Bone
Densitometry is a state–of-the-art radiology procedure, which
determines bone mineral density or bone mass. Bone mineral measurements
are very highly correlated with bone strength and have been shown
empirically to predict the potential for bone fractures and osteoporosis.
Are There Common Risk Factors?
Yes
there are. Woman who are postmenopausal or early menopause before
the age of 45 are at risk, as are individuals that have a family
history of osteoporosis, take certain steroid medications, smoke,
abuse alcohol, inadequate calcium intake and inactive lifestyle.
How
is the Bone Densitometry Exam Performed?
The
patient will be asked to lie on their back on an exam table for the bone densitometry exam. An
overhead arm will travel above your body, taking readings. It is
very important that you lie still while the images are being taken,
so that the pictures are clear. It is a simple, painless and non-invasive
procedure, which takes approximately 20 minutes. The images will
be sent to a computer at which time will generate a computerized
printout, with your readings.
How
to Prepare for a Bone Densitometry Exam?
You
will be asked to wear a comfortable two-piece outfit when taking the bone densitometry exam, like a sweat
suit, for your test. You must not wear any metal buttons, buckles
or zippers, as these materials may interfere with your pictures.
